The CI Tournament was founded as a way to "compete" with the New Year's Classic in Athens GA, offering an alternative for Quiz Teams on the Front Range and in the western states.
The idea began with Dan Cline and Ben Rohrs after we had written a short book on Intramural Bible Quizzing in the local church. After we worked out all the event details we presented the idea to Pastor Craig Scott, who approved the tournament under the direction of then Youth Pastor Larry Kaighen.
We wanted a cool acronym and originally we thought of using F.R.U.I.T.: The Front Range Ultimate Invitational Tournament. This was later simplified to Colorado Invitational.
Our first Tournament was held January 3rd, 1997. This was a full day of quizzing, using a point system for non-stop quizzing by all of the teams. We then held an awards banquet catered by Fazoli's where we started our tradition of awarding individual medals to the top 10 quizzers and trophies to the top 3 teams.
After the first couple years we decided to move the tournament from January to President's Day Weekend so Woodside could also attend the Athens tournament. We've had many other changes over the years, but we still have the same hospitality and excitement for quizzing each year!
Some of our records were lost in 2000 & 2001 so if you have a team trophy, individual medal or any other records from those years please share that information with us!
