DP--How would you compare the quizzing at the Colorado
Invitational to that of the Athens tournament? to that of SCQANIT/NATIONALS?
In my opinion the quizzing at the CI is probably the tightest quizzing of
all the tournaments with the exception of AACS. Due somewhat to our
location, and mostly to the size of our facility we can only have a limited
number of teams, I think somewhere around 12-16. However, last year the top
7 teams in the final rankings were at our tournament. I haven't seen the
actual lineup of teams coming this year, but from what I've been told it is
going to be about the same caliber of teams. Which means that you have to be
on your game from the moment you walk into the building Saturday morning.
While at some of the larger tournaments there are going to be quizzes that
you can have an off quiz and still come away with a fairly easy high win. So
I think the caliber of the teams is among, if not the highest of any of the
tournaments.
DP--Since you have a national tournament in your home town and have
quizzed in other national tournaments away from home, do you feel that there
is an advantage of quizzing at home?
I personally would rather quiz away from home. I think for me it helps to
have that 12-20 hour van ride to get away from thinking about school and
sports and everything else going on at home and being able to focus on
quizzing. Also for me I don't like quizzing in front of a lot of people that
I know I get distracted easier. Then the biggest reason I like quizzing away
from home is the time you get to spend with your friends, I know some of my
best friendships have been through quizzing. So in my opinion there is not
and advantage quizzing at home.
DP--What tournament besides Nationals and the CI is your favorite?
Well, I really enjoy the Michigan tournament in November, because it gives
you a chance to really see where your at after the work you've done during
the summer. But I think my favorite one is going to have to be the
California Invitational. It was so much fun last year, the quizzing was
great. Valley was a great host, the trip to the beach was a very nice touch.
I think more of the East Coast teams should try and make it out there. It is
a great final tune-up before SCQANIT and Nationals.
DP--Not counting Woodside, who do you feel fas the best shot to win the
CI?
Well, I don't like answering this question, since I obviously have a strong
bias. And quizzing never seems to turn out how anyone expects. But I'll try
anyway. My head is telling me to go with FBC-CF, but my gut is saying Old
Paths. Then I'm also really looking forward to seeing Tri-City for the first
time this year. I've been trying to learn to trust my gut instincts so I'm
going to have to say Old Paths.
DP--Is there a team that has really surprised you this year?
A surprise team? Well, I guess there is Pleasant View, KY. but honestly they
haven't surprised me, when we quizzed against them at AACS last year they
were very strong and I could see that they would be even stronger this year
and they have been. Also I haven't seen Capitol City, but I would tend to
think that the reports of their downfall have been exaggerated, so we will
see.
DP--Any other interesting stuff you would like to share...
Hmm...This is going to be a great tournament. And I guess I do have one last
thing to say: Read your Bible, Pray every day, and you'll grow, grow, grow!

Dave Douglas - Quizmaster
(Interview by Paul Gipson)
PG--How long have you been involved in quizzing?
DD--Since I was in 8th Grade. Which was 26 or 27 years ago.
PG--How long have you been a quizmaster?
DD--I was a Quizmaster for the first time about 17 years ago
PG--Do you get nervous before a quiz?
DD--No, I love it.
PG--What have you seen the most through the years as the
biggest benefit of Quizzing for the kids?
DD--Kids who are serious about quizzing and who study the Word of God
consistently tend to struggle less. When they do make mistakes they usually
can find the answers they need in God's Word to get back on track. I've seen
the vast majority of kids who really worked hard at Quizzing, turn out to be
wonderful, spiritually mature adults.
